Renewed Minds – Be Still And Know

In a previous message, I referred to Romans 12: 1 and 2 and drew the analogy of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. It is an interesting process. The first thing that the caterpillar does is to wrap itself up into a cocoon. Why this is necessary, I don’t know. Wouldn’t it be easier to sit down and do the job in the open? After all, spinning a cocoon is tough, painstaking and time-consuming. Perhaps there is a spiritual lesson for us in this process. Paul says that if we desire to know God’s plan for our lives, we need to change our thought patterns; our mindset. When I visited the USA, seven years ago, my mind was boggled by your magnificent land of ‘muchness and manyness’. I was totally confused when I went into one of your big shops to buy a packet of breakfast cereal. If you’ve been into a shop in Zimbabwe, you’ll probably find two or three types of cereal. Imagine my confusion when I found a whole row of different types of cereal! I wasted a lot of time in that shop, just trying to decide what type of cereal to buy. Life is a lot simpler for us in Africa where we have limited options! If I am fortunate enough to own a TV, I might be able to choose between three channels. Only about 10% of people in Zimbabwe have access to TV. Most of us don’t have a clue about American football, basketball or who won what Oscar when. Michael Jackson, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez – sorry, never heard of them; my favourite eating place? Only two choices – around the lapa fire or in the dining room! What’s my point? We are privileged that, in Africa, we have so few distractions to keep us busy. It’s much easier for us to find time to ‘be still’ before God. We have more time to wrap ourselves into a cocoon like the caterpillar and allow God to transform our minds. I pray that your trip to Zimbabwe will induce you to ‘unplug’ yourself from some of the unnecessary distractions of your land of ‘muchness and manyness’ and ‘tune in’ to God. We need the quietness of the cocoon to transform us into butterflies who will fly in freedom from worldly distractions and come to know God more fully. ‘Be still and know that I am God’. In His Name,
